Dougherty Elementary School is situated off Central Parkway, on Hibernia Road. It is Dublin Unified School District’s biggest elementary school. With 30 teachers, Dougherty currently has more than 690 students enrolled in kindergarten through fifth grade.

The school has six classes in kindergarten, six classes in first grade, five classes in second grade, four classes in third grade, four classes in fourth grade and four classes in fifth grade. School activities include educational music, physical education, a fifth-grade choir, library and computer lab leadership opportunities. For the 2016-17 academic year, the number of students attaining Math skills is 76 percent (which is higher than the California state average of 38 percent). For the 2016-17 academic year, the number of students attaining reading/language arts skills is 80 percent (which is higher than the California state average of 48 percent).

For the 2016-17 academic year, James Dougherty Elementary School ranked average test scores in the top 5 percent of all schools in California (math ability is top 5 percent, and reading ability is top 10 percent). Minority enrollment is 83 percent of the student body (majority Asian), which is 76 percent higher than the state average in California.

The 26:1 student: teacher ratio is higher than the 23:1 State average in California. The teacher population of 35 teachers decreased by 5 percent over five years of education.

James Dougherty Elementary School is currently on a 9.9 out of 10 ranking. The ranking is based on the success of students on standardized state assessments relative to other California schools. 9 percent of students at James Dougherty Elementary School has “poor English abilities.” 

Brett Nelson is the principal at James Dougherty Elementary School. He’s extraordinary, very enthusiastic and kind to the pupils and has made this school one of the richest in the town. He introduced wonderful academic programs for the graduates, one of which is the running Dolphins program to encourage running at an early age. Another one is the extended daycare program where teachers have been really dedicated and caring. The teachers are fantastic!
