I FEEL sick.
When we live it we know it. For all of us, as the years pass the seasons become more and more familiar. We become better acquainted to what summer feels like; what fall feels like; what winter feels like; and what spring feels like – to each of us the seasons are a unique experience that we “feel” in our own unique way. I woke up at 12:34 am from my daughter’s frequent cough. She’s 6 now. Winter is approaching, and yes that cough so familiar during this time of year is again talking to me. I had forgotten about that cough, throughout the year it hibernates and wakes in winter. My homeopathic studies brought to life the reality of this cough. It’s nothing really to fear, it’s an asthmatic cough, and it appears seasonally – for the most part.
I went to her bedside to do what I’ve done since she was a baby with this cough, I massaged her hands and feet. Right then an inner dialogue began to happen and I realized how few people I could share this with, so I really cherished it. The fact is as a bodyworker, I literally “feel” sick. No, she’s not sick. What I mean is that from a bodyworker’s perspective I can feel what a body feels like when they aren’t in their best state of health. The dialogue sent me back years and I remembered touching different people in their different types of dis-ease. Some were on their death beds, some with flu’s or colds, some in pain, others healthy but not well. I realized that it’d be hard to share this dialogue through pictures, a movie, words, nothing can capture this knowing, this understanding – like feeling – and someone can only come to this realization through working with the body, sensing the body day after day, year after year.
Just a few minutes pass and her hands and feet are softer. Her cough has cleared, she’s more rested. In a deep sense I can truly say, “I’m honored to “feel” sick.”
